Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels on the face. It can also cause bumps and pimples, as well as burning and stinging sensations. While there is no cure for rosacea, there are several things you can do to manage the condition and keep your skin healthy.

  1. Use gentle skin care products: Choose products that are formulated for sensitive skin and avoid those that contain alcohol, fragrances and other irritants.

  2. Avoid hot water: Hot water can worsen the redness and inflammation associated with rosacea, so try to use lukewarm water instead.

  3. Protect your skin from the sun: Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

  4. Avoid triggers: Some common triggers for rosacea flares include sunlight, spicy foods, alcohol and hot drinks. Try to avoid these as much as possible.

  5. Keep your skin moisturized: Dry skin can be a trigger for rosacea, so it's important to keep your skin moisturized. Use a gentle, oil-free moisturizer to hydrate your skin without clogging pores.

  6. Avoid harsh products: Retinoids and chemical peels may be too irritating for rosacea-prone skin. If you decide to use them, make sure you take it slow at first (bakuchiol may be a better alternative to a retinoid as it is less irritating)

  7. Use green makeup: Green makeup such as primers will mask any background redness.

  8. Look for over-the-counter products with azelaic acid, niacinamide, L-ascorbic acid (vitamin c) and vitamin B5, many of which you can buy here.

  9. Consult with a dermatologist: If your rosacea is severe or does not improve with over-the-counter treatments, consider consulting with a dermatologist for more personalized treatment options.

Dry eczema-prone skin

Dry skin is a common problem that can cause itching, flaking, and a tight, uncomfortable feeling. If you have dry skin, you may find that your skin is especially prone to irritation and inflammation. Here are some skin care tips to help you keep your dry skin healthy and moisturized.

  1. Use a gentle cleanser: Avoid harsh soaps or cleansers that can strip your skin of natural oils. Instead, choose a gentle cleanser to help hydrate your skin.

  2. Apply moisturizer immediately after showering: Your skin is most receptive to moisture immediately after showering, so it's important to apply moisturizer to your skin while it's still damp. This will help lock in moisture and prevent your skin from feeling dry. Consider a hand cream after washing your hands.

  3. Use a humidifier: Dry air can exacerbate dry skin, so using a humidifier in your home can help add moisture to the air and keep your skin hydrated.

  4. Avoid hot water: Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, instead bathe with lukewarm water.

  5. Protect your skin from the sun: Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

  6. Avoid harsh products: Retinoids and chemical peels may be too irritating for dry skin. If you decide to use them, make sure you take it slow at first.

  7. Consult with a dermatologist: If your eczema is severe or does not improve with over-the-counter treatments, consider consulting with a dermatologist for more personalized treatment options.

Oily acne-prone skin

Oily skin is a common problem that can cause blemishes, blackheads, and a shiny, greasy appearance. If you have oily skin, you may find that your skin is especially prone to acne and other types of breakouts. Here are some skin care tips to help you manage oily skin.

  1. Cleanse your skin twice daily: Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt, and makeup from your skin.

  2. Apply a light, oil-free moisturizer: Even if you have oily skin, it's important to moisturize to keep your skin healthy and balanced.

  3. Use retinoids or retinols: Retinoids can dry your skin out, get rid of blackheads and have a host of other amazing benefits.

  4. Protect your skin from the sun: Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

  5. Consult with a dermatologist: If your acne is severe or does not improve with over-the-counter treatments, consider consulting with a dermatologist for more personalized treatment options.

Anti-aging

There are several things you can do to help maintain a youthful appearance and slow the signs of aging. Here are some tips for how to achieve this.

  1. Wear sunscreen: Sun exposure can cause premature aging, including wrinkles, sunspots, and uneven skin tone. To protect your skin, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days.

  2. Avoid smoking: Smoking damages your skin in multiple ways, including reducing the blood flow to your skin and breaking down collagen and elastin, which are proteins that give your skin its elasticity and strength.

  3. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can cause dark circles and puffiness. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to help your skin look its best.

  4. Eat a healthy diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats can help nourish your skin and keep it looking youthful.

  5. Use retinoids or retinols: Retinoids/retinols are forms of vitamin A that can stimulate collagen production and improve the texture and tone of your skin.

  6. Apply vitamin C to your skin: vitamin C prevent the formation of free radicals, which contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in our skin.

Melasma/hyperpigmentation

Melasma and hyperpigmentation are common skin conditions that cause dark, uneven patches on the skin. If you have melasma or hyperpigmentation, you may be looking for ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Here are some skin care tips for people with melasma and hyperpigmentation.

  1. Wear sunscreen: Sun exposure can worsen melasma and hyperpigmentation, so it's important to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

  2. Use a skin lightening product: There are several over-the-counter skin lightening products that contain ingredients such as retinoids, kojic acid, azelaic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C, which can all help lighten dark patches on the skin.

  3. Avoid triggers: Certain things can trigger or worsen melasma and hyperpigmentation, such as hormonal changes, sun exposure and certain medications (“the pill”, minocycline, etc). Try to avoid these triggers or use them in moderation.

  4. Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser: Choose a gentle cleanser to avoid irritation and inflammation, which can worsen melasma and hyperpigmentation.

  5. Consult with a dermatologist: If your melasma or hyperpigmentation is severe or does not improve with over-the-counter treatments, consider consulting with a dermatologist for more personalized treatment options.

“Normal” skin

Here are some general skin care tips for maintaining healthy, radiant skin.

  1. Cleanse your skin twice daily: Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt, and makeup from your skin. Avoid using harsh soaps or cleansers that can strip your skin of its natural oils, as this can lead to dryness and irritation.

  2. Moisturize: Even if you have oily skin, it's important to moisturize to keep your skin healthy and balanced. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to hydrate your skin without adding excess oil.

  3. Wear sunscreen: Sun exposure can cause premature aging, including wrinkles, sunspots, and uneven skin tone. To protect your skin, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days.

  4. Consider vitamin C and retinoids/retinols: throwing a vitamin C serum in your AM routine and a retinol in your PM routine will build collagen, even skin tone and result in healthier-looking skin.

  5. Get enough sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to help your skin look its best.

  6. Eat a healthy diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats can help nourish your skin and keep it looking healthy.
